Default A/C out

Well my AC seems to have decided it does not want to work . When driving without any air on, it's fine.. but when you turn on the air (either AC or just air) there will be a sound about every ten seconds that sounds like banging.. When I got out I looked at the pulley on the AC and the outside part of the pulley spins when the sound is made.. I'm assuming I have to change the AC. Is this difficult to do? I've only changed the water pump and spark plugs/wires, so not much experience(I'm only 17).. it's my first truck and I'd rather not send it to a shop. Any ideas/tips? How easy/hard is the repair?

I took my AC pump off, disassembled it, sent it out for polishing, and put it back on. It is not hard to do, if you can turn a wrench, you can do it. You will find alot of help in here, that it will be a catwalk to change.
