98 ram 2500 brakes hubs bearings
I have a 98 ram 2500 cummins and I have a braking issue. It pulls to the right really hard when I stop and when stopping hard from freeway speeds the front of my truck vibrates real bad. I took the wheels off and the left front seems to be good and the right front seems to have a warped rotor. I can spin the rotor by hand about half way then I have to pry it the rest of the way. Now I decided to get new rotors but after reading on this site that doesn't seem so simple. I'm afraid to take off the rotor/hub assembly because of the bearings. From what I understand, in order to change rotors on my truck I'll have to buy a complete rotor hub and bearing assembly? Is all this necessary just to resurface my rotors? Or is it possible to take the rotor/hub assembly off with the bearings still attached?
I would look in the manual ...that way you can see the proper procedure and only you know if you feel confident enough to do the job....the rotors easy to change if your bearings are in good shape just need to repack them with grease and torque everything right....the new bearing races are already in the new rotors.
If the 98 is like the 97 2500, you do have to take the hub bearing out with the rotor. It is a PITA but very doable. The 2500 is not like the 1500 where you can just remove the rotor. If you try, you will split the hub bearing. Soak the hub bearing with PB blaster to help in the removal and leave overnight if possible. My NAPA said they could turn the rotor with the hub bearing attached. I didn't need to turn it as I was after my u-joints. If you are digging in that deep, you may want to change the u-joint while there. Good luck, it's not that tough of a diy job. Todd
