hey guys does the volt gauge read off the battery or what the alternator is putting out.[/align]thanks fred[/align]

The volt gauge reads the voltage in the electrical system.

If the truck is NOT running, you will be reading battery voltage. If the truck is running and the charging system is working properly, you will be reading the alternator's output voltage.

actually the voltmeter just reads the amount of charge the battery has. When the truck is not running it show the amount of charge the battery has. When the truck is running it is showing the amount charge has when the alternator is giving the battery, remember the alternator not only powers all accessories but also charges the battery, so while you are driving the voltmeter will have a charge since it is being charged. Hope this helps you and you have a better understanding of your gauges.
