Default Should I install a set of 3.92's?

My buddy upgraded the gears in his 05 Ram and gave me the stock 3.92's with 3200 miles on them. Right now my truck has the stock 3.55's. I am running the stock 265/75 tires with plans to get a set of 275/60 20's very soon.

This truck is used for street driving with very occasional towing. I have added a 52mm throttle body, Harland Sharp 1.7's, free flowing exhaust. What I am looking to improve on is the low end, or lack there of. My intention is not to burn rubber off the line, but I do want it to get up and go.

With all that in mind I wanted to go up to 4.10's. However, looking at this free set of 3.92's I can have makes ittempting. Labor is not an issue as I will be doingyet anothergear swap myself. So I figured $200 or so for the front and rear install kits plus misc items and its a done deal.

What I am trying to find out is will I notice an improvement going to 3.92's? I saw many threads where people loved the improvement of going from 3.55's to 4.10's. All I was able to find was people saying not to install the 3.92's and go right to the 4.10's. I did not find much feedback regarding a 3.55 to 3.92 swap.

I am entertaining anyone's feedback regarding going from 3.55's to 3.92's...

hell yeah, go for it, I've got 3.55s and I wish I had 3.92s or 4.10. As it is now I've got 265/75 tires and I want to go bigger but I feel like my gearing is too tall as it is now. When I have $500 laying around (like that ever happens) I'm going to swap mine.

I would definitely go for it, I mean you said you don't really tow and you've got 265's with plans for 275's, 3.92's might be just right for ya. I've got 285's now and its horrible, wish I could get a free pair of 3.92's :P

I don't think the gears that came in the '05 will work in your '97. I thought the 9.25 they are using in the new models is different. I don't know for certains, but if I was you, I would check that first before you do anything. I know that Summit and Randy's list different part numbers for the second gen and third gen Rams.

Hmmm... I will have to look into this. I know the rear diff works in the 2nd and 3rd gen as I have a 3rd gen in mine. When I get a chance I will call the dealer.

I don't know if they would work but if thats all you think you need I say go for it. Should be better than what you have now although if I was going to spend all that in labor I'd go ahead and throw a set of 4.10's in there.

If they'd fit, I'd do it. Big difference between 3:92s and 3:55s. Suprisingly, theres only about a 120 rpm difference between 3:92s and 4:10s at cruise. I don't believe you'd notice a power issue.

Labor is a non issue as I will be doing it all myself. I've got to find out if the gears will work on a 2nd gen though. I see no reason why the rears wouldnt. The front is what I am questioning now.
