Default oil pressure -roll the dice?

hey guys. i did a search on here and thought i would post to see what you guys think in this instance. i have had my oil light flashing intermittently and my pressure dropping (according to the guage). anyway, i bought a new sending unit to try to rule that out. it proved to be more ag than it was worth. my oil was about a quart over-filled and i drained it to the proper level. i took it for a test drive and had no oil related lights/problems. i am hoping it was just over filled. after doing the search on here, i discovered it is very rare that the oil pump would go bad. so i guess my question is this -if the oil pump is bad, wouldnt it drop pressure all the time rather than just once in a while? it seems to be more symptomatic of an electrical issue than a mechanical issue. mechanical stuff is generally broke or not broke. very seldom in between. what do you guys think?

check your oil level. if it is low it will do it -and if it is high, it will do it. i drained my oil down to the appropriate level and have not had an incident yet. i am taking it on a longer test drive today and hopefully it is problem solved. i plan to take a 4 hour trip with it on thursday and i'm keeping my fingers crossed. i bought a sending unit but you have to have a special tool and be harry houdini to get to the damn thing. according to my research on here -99% of the time, these problems are electrical. this really makes sense, because if the pump were bad, i would think that it would act up ALL the time. mine does it intermittently. the only thing i can think that could be really bad is the screen might be getting clogged. i will know more after driving it today. i will probably put 60 miles or so on it today.

test drive yesterday no good! light came on and guage flopped to below zero in traffic at a light. i deliberately let it flounder below zero until the traffic light changed. no noise whatsoever! i think it is definately the sending unit now! how long do you guys think an engine could run with zero oil pressure on a warm day before hearing some kind of lifter noise or something???????? i think i'm good. guess i will find out for sure when i go on this long trip this weekend.

i had a similar problem, i put an aftermarket gauge in and it was ok, it must be in the wiring or the dash. but now i am having low oil pressure all the time 5-10 psi. i just replaced the oil pump, which helped but still drops to around 8 psi at 1500 rpm... i think i need bearings. but with your problem i would hooking an aftermarked gauge on it to see if its the sender unit, eletrical, or the oil pump. that will tell ya if the gauge is bad or not.
