Default transfer case

I have a question about the linkage on the NP231. I have had problems for some time when shifting out of 4L. I have had to turn the truck off or it would grind and sound awefull! I never messed with the linkage, just turned it off when I rarely used 4L. Now here I am with a 5.5" lift and the thing is giving me big time grief! Havn't had a problem for a couple weeks, but used 4L for the 1st time since I got the lift and it kept trying to shift into 4wd while in the 2H position, I spent a couple hours trying to figure out if it was just the linkage or maybe something else. I unplugged the vaccum lines running to the axle, but still tries to grind and slip when coasting down any grade or slowing down...anything I could try? Transfer case is OE by the way, so maybe it's time to upgrade to a better gear driven rather than the chain?

Default RE: transfer case

Since nobody has anything to say, I'll ask another question. I found out the problem is more than likely the forks that inside the transfer case are worn and causing it to slip back into N. I talked to many reputable drivetrain shops and they all said that these trucks are notorious for having this problem...anyone else heard this?
