Default what do the experts think...??

Hey guys, new to the forum...I want to get some input..

I have a friend that has a 98 5.2 Quadcab w/ 97K miles and is looking to sell it - It needs some work though....
[ul][*]Definitely needs a transmission. It is driveable but shifts VERY rough and sometimes wont shift at all[*]Leakscoolant when you first start it. Seems to be coming from the front belt and pulley area.[*]Horrible/loud sound coming from the same area - possibly related to the coolant leak.[*]Speedometer is lifeless, ABS light and brake lights stay on. From my research, HERE, I tried to replace the VSS this morning, to no avail. I think this is a result of the tranny being hosed.[*]Front speakers do not work - but I am not worried, I plan to swap the entire system out.[*]Also it SAT for over a year and was not ran[*]Other than that interior is great (leather) and the exterior is good as well.[*]I have always owned a Chevy truck - BUT have heard nothing but good things about the 2nd gen Dodges.[/ul]
So here is my question for the seasoned Dodge veterans on here - How much is it roughly worth and ballpark what kind of $$ am I looking at for the repairs...?? I really want to buy the truck - but do not want endless headaches...

Thanks in advance for your input....

Eric

you didn't say, so i will assume quadcab short bed, 2wd, SLT, loaded.

www.kbb.com says its worth this.
excellent 6350
good 5835
fair 5135

now, your problems.

transmission and torque converter will cost you about $2000.

leaking water and screeching is probably water pump. repair yourself for 200-300+ and include all belts, hoses, etc. or take to dealer for about 500-750+.

abs and brake. ongoing debate whether this is speed sensor in rear differential or tranny. you could replace both for probably $50 each. call it 100 for both.

just my opinion... i think its worth about 2500-3000. if it needs brakes, tires, plenum repair, paint, front end work, cracked dash, heater core, AC, PS pump, steering box, etc, then make additional price adjustments. sounds like a good, distressed, project truck, thats going to take a good bit of time and/or money. so don't over pay. you might get away with a trans repair rather than rebuild, but assume the worst.

Cool, thanks for the reponse....my apologies for leaving that out...it is the loaded SLT....

In a wierd way I am actually excited to get my hands on it....From everyone I have talked to, they say it is a great truck - just needs some attention...

Speedometer/odometer in 98+ trucks get their feed from the PCM which reads the pulses coming from the RWSS. If it's dead, it will set the ABS and Brake lights as well. The debate is if it will set a CEL. Mine (and many others) did not. Some did ... trying to figure out why the difference.

Water pump is toast.

kbb says this. it doesn't make adjustments for lift, neither plus nor minus.
private party
excellent 11,275
good 10,565
fair 9,640

trade in
excellent 9,525
good 8,900
fair 7,795

the 7k-9k trade-in sounds reasonable. don't do business w/the guy that offered you 4.
have you listed it on autotrader.com ?
i bought mine from there.

He can fix it for probably <$400 if he does it himself

The trans probably isn't shot if it still shifts. It could be a few things, the TPS could be acting up, or the TV cable that goes from the throttle linkage to the valve body might be adjusted wrong. The bands also might be screwed up, its not uncommon for the bands and adjusters to come loose and actually fall out onto the bottom of the trans pan. Pull the pan and see if theres any pieces in there, if there are its not to hard to fix but can be a pita...

The coolant leak at start up is the water pump going bad 90% chance, and thats also whats causing the sound coming from the front. If it doesn't get replaced soon it will end up falling apart and the fann will fly off cutting rad hoses, the fan shroud, and probably the rad itself.

As for the speedo and ABS light, rear wheel speed senror, its on the rear diff, its not the VSS. If the trans works and shifts its not gonna be the trans causing the speedo to work most likely.

Rough price:

TPS :$40
TV cable adjust: FREE
Water Pump: $50 with core probably
Speed sensor: $50

Speakers is probably just a short in the dash.

This sounds like a great truck needs a little TLC it never recieved. I would invest in it and if you do the work yourself it'll be a Saturday project and a few hundy compared to a week in the shop at >$2000.
