ring in pan
Good day people, thanks for a great forum. I have an 01 dodge ram 1500 4x4. I changed the tranny filter and oil over the weekend. I found a 3 inch section of what looks to be a retaining ring in the botton of the pan. the truck runs fine, this was just maintenence I due in the spring. looks like i will need a tranny rebuild. has anyone seen this happean before. thanks Ted

It could actually be a number of different snap rings that you found. Mine happened to be the snap ring on the oil pump that I had found in my pan. This however was due to an improper installation.
From what most of the trans guys on here say, the OD snap ring is by far the most common one to break.
I rebuilt my entire transmission a few months ago. If it is truly from your OD then you might be able to just pull the OD section off (it bolts up to the back of the trans) and get that rebuilt. I don't remember if you need to be inside of the main part of the trans to get to all of the bolts that seperate the two.
Good Luck!
