Default late shifting 2nd to 3rd...adjustment??

1996 dodge 5.2 auto , shifts at high rpms from 2nd to 3rd, sometimes exceeds 50 mph before this happens.... Is this an adjustment to the throttle valve cable or a sensor replacement on the trans?

ya know thats a good question, i'm having the same problem. It started happening right after i removed the throttle body and put in a new IAC. fixed my idle problem, but now there's this shifting issue. I checked the throttle valve cable, didn't seem like anything was wrong.

This will fix the issue. If it doesn't than it's an actuator or vacuum issue.

thanks cappin but your instructions seem wrong , "
For LATER, FIRMER shifts, slide the cable housing further OUT of (rearward) the locking
mechanism.
" , by moving the cable farther "out" that is actually forward, and vice-versa. Hope you can clear that up for me. thanks

My 96 did that at around 70,000 miles in cold weather, after 15 miles it it shifted normal.
One dealer said it needed rebuilt and one said maybe a flush would help but no guarantee. I had it flushed, filter changed and bands adjusted for around $200.00 and it has done just fine for 40,000 miles.
Now let the flaming start for flushing it!

It's not. I got that from montec in the tranny section.

oh man, i think this may be my problem. Cause i took that clip off and i think i may of broke it. so i guess that's more than just some stupid clip that holds the cable on there firmly.... thank you for showing this. i will take a look at it later today.

yo, so i adjusted the throttle valve cable, and I agree with rwillie, i slid the housing backwards, and it made the shifting more smooth and held the gears a shorter amount of time. I slid it back about 1/8" and i read on another forum saying that is what was default from the factory. Now it shifts smooth again and everything is running great. Thanks
