Default 5.9 gas to 5.9 cummins swap

I know this is gonna be tough and take some money and time but i have a second ride and alot of time.
So hears what i want to do: Put either a 12v in my truck.
Its a 96 2500 HD 5 speed so it laready has a cummins: trans and transfercase(need to change bellhousing and input shaft), drive shafts and axles.
what else would need to be done to make my dream a reality?

I think the rout im going to go is buy a engine and build it up over time while its out of the truck and gather the other various parts i need then when i get everything arout put it all together!
Im jut not shure what all i need or if anything needs switched around! any help is appreicated!

This is what i know i will need for shure:
12v cummins and motor mounts
bellhousing an input shaft
fuel pump and lines
gauge cluster
intercooler

Buy a rolling chassis version of the truck / drive train you want. Drop your body on that frame.

I have seen these threads a lot and honestly this is probably the cheaper option.

need front springs out of a cummins truck...the motor weighs 2x as much as your v8..

no idea how the gauges work on the 12v trucks...

you will need to completely drain and clean the fuel tank and change the fuel canister. I recommend using a vulcan modified liberty fuel module.. and getting an airdog for a lift pump. that should cover the fuel system.

you will also want to open up the timing cover on the new engine and do the killer dowel pin fix. (basically weld on a tab to the bolt next to the dowel pin that will hold the dowel pin in place and not let it come out.)

if you want to build the engine you can get a 2nd gen 24v head, head studs, 24v P7100 conversion injection lines, and injectors for the 2nd gen 24v head which will give great flow improvement over the 12v head. should bolt right up. blocks didn't change much between 12v P7100 and 24v vp44...in fact: the 98 12v had the exact same block as the 98.5-2000 24v.

the older ones just had some differences in ports on the block...if you ever want to run twin turbo's, I suggest getting the 98 block...it has the extra oil drains already in the block.

might also want to get a south bend or valair double disk clutch along with input shaft, and use graphite to lube the input shaft so the clutch disks move freely on it. also upgrade to their HD clutch hydraulics.

you will want a D60 in the front, and D80 in the rear for axles, and make sure you have the HD transfer case...you can tell it from the LD by looking at it...the HD case has a PTO cover on it.

It has Dana 60 front axel not shure about rear axel all the build sheat says is 200mm rear axel and 4.10 gears with posi. And I know it has the 241 HD transfer case.

^^^ It's a 60 rear end. Make sure to take the axle with the Cummins.

How will my trans handle under the extra torque and horsepower? I wold like to put in a 6 speed from a 24v... Is this possible?

yes. NV5600's can be obtained.

there's no electronics on the NV5600 other than the reverse light switch which is the same switch the NV4500 uses.

its a heavy trans though..weighs over 400lbs. made of cast iron
