General Tire Grabber AT2s
Im getting new tires on the truck on the 13th, and I was pretty set on getting a set of BFG AT KOs. Im looking for 265/70/16s. I can get a set of those mounted and balanced for $780 +tax. I just like having a name brand in reality, but I do know that the BFG AT is an excellent tire (IMO). But I have seen the General Grabbers which have a very identical tread pattern, a little softer sidewall so it will ride smoother, and a lot cheaper price tag. The question is, would you put them on your truck? Im looking for good performance on wet/snowy roads but something I can keep on all year, and look good at the same time. Any opinions on this tire company? I could save about $250 or so.
I have a real hard time realizing how much tires are going to cost for mine (17" wheels). I try to go the cheap route, and that has done me well. I had a frontier before this one with 16's on it and I was able to get a set of Definity Dakota's for it for less than $400 mounted and balanced. If you rotate often, these off brands will last as long (or longer) as a name brand and I never had issues with using them. But I think I will have to shell out bucks now that I have 17" wheels, I have a hard time finding a good selection of off brand tires in the size that I want (275-65/17)
Yeah, this is the one and only set of tires I want to buy for the truck while I own it so they will have to go 40-50k miles. I just feel "cheap" by putting the off brand on. Everything I buy is normally a name brand well backed company. I think Ill go with the Generals though because then I will have the extra money to get the transmission and differential fluid changed before winter and I wont have to use a charge card. They should look just as good as the BFGs.
Get the Generals, same tread pattern and higher overall quality without the advertising nut to have to pay for. BFGs and Goodyears are the most over-priced, average to below average quality tires on the market and between them have an advertising budget over all other tire makers combined...
Will the softer side wall be ok in the generals? I believe they are 3 ply while the BFGs are 6 ply. I dont care about road noise or how rough the ride is. My truck is a road queen and rarely hits anything but pavement so I think I should be good with 3 ply? Thanks for your input hammer.
i had general a/ts on my old truck for about 20k. they didn't wear much, but the truck got totaled. did great in snow and ok in sand.
now i need tires for this truck so im probably going with general again from my local guy.

I'm very happy with my Firestone Destination ATs _ a nice affordable alternative to the BFG ATs (which I would have preferred, but the wallet just wouldn't allow it right now). They look good, tread is nice and deep, and they ride very nice. I would check them out. I think they also make a Dueler AT and at the time I got their goofy Firestone CC w/ gave me 6 or 12 months no payments no interest...installed, etc. for $630 (Oakland, CA). I blew off all the extra warranties and crap.
I shopped around a alot and wasn't convinced until I went and physically looked at them.

Here are some photos. Not the greatest pics, but it will give you an idea. Again, I would go look for them or watch for another vehicle that has them. Keep in mind my size was 245/70R16.

Thanks for the input guys.
Saroni, those are what I have on my truck right now. Not too bad of tire, but Im not happy with the performance in snow.
I just dont want to end up wishing I had spent the extra money and got the bfgs a year down the road.

my dad had a cheap set of tires on his sec gen dakota that lasted 60k with rotation. he still has them on and puts about 40+ miles on his truck a day he is nearing 70k with almost no tread on them still. i don't remember what brand they are though.
