Make a box to go around that intake and fab up a bumper scoop like mine. It keeps the intake temps way cooler since a CAI wont draw any cool air through that hole by itself.
Do you have pics of your box and scoop?

Here's everything you need to know about a custom "ram air" intake. Bobby did an awesome job on this.

Thanks Kent.

The thread doesnt get good until the last few pages. Lol. I ended up quiting for a while because it was irritating me since it wasnt going together the way I wanted, and I was in the basement a couple weeks later and decided to proceed. Its still on the truck and holding up good.

The scoop does nothing while the truck isnt moving. Since this isnt a sealed setup due to a fear of getting water in the intake, water needs to be pushed in through the scoop, not sucked in. While moving at anything above 40 mph, it stays alot cooler. On an average summer day, my IAT readings would be over 100 degrees, but this would keep them around 80-90 on a 70 degree day. The power I gain from having the scoop is comparable to the power you have when you just took your truck out and it has just reached operating temperature. I have no idea exactly how much power it is, but it would never hurt. Definetly get the prefilter before setting anything like this up though, as I have to dust off the prefilter weekly. Without it my filter would be black. The idea for this came after I put the CAI on, and I realized all it does is suck hot air from under the hood, which is probably no better than a stock intake that draws air from the fender.

does it increase mpg at all, i really like the way you set that up. im thinking about doing it but using pvc piping and flex joints. would there be any downsides to using plastic compared to the galv alum? when you say prefilter are you talking about that little piece of screening inside of the pipe right after the 6inch -> 3inch connector? how did you fit that in there?

edit: what about putting some sort of screen/filter on the outside of the cone part like where it sits inside the bumper? or would that defeat the whole purpose of having a ton of air shoot through there?

I honestly dont measure MPGs and probably could never get an accurate reading since I couldnt keep my foot out of it for that long. Like most mods, every little thing helps. Im guessing if you did mostly highway driving, it would help you because the colder air you are pushing in the air box contains more O2 than the hot air you would suck from the engine bay. With city driving, it probably wouldnt improve much because you would never get enough air moving up there to make a difference.

Plastic vs Galvanized pipe: No difference in how they will affect everything after youre done. Im interested to see how the galvanized pipe holds up this winter; it may not have been the greatest material for a WI winter.

For the prefilter I meant the Airaid cover on the air filter. The screen between the scoop and the pipe was just laid flat over the end of the first section of pipe, and then I put the scoop on it and thats how its held in there. You could place the screen between the scoop and the bumper if youd like, I just found it easier to keep in place where I put it. The idea was to just keep leaves and large stuff out of there. I find it catches a lot of bugs.

didnt wanna make a new thread so ill just post mine here.

I bought my intake from the same store/company as cue44 did. only thing is i didnt know they were based in the same city that i work in so i paid for shipping not knowing.

1 problem with mine was that the air intake temperature sensor was not going to stretch over no matter what i did unless i cut the wires and extend them or get one of those wire harness extenders.

i told chrome intakes about this and they assured me it was going to fit. so i got pissed and took it down there on my lunch a day after getting it and showed them. they agreed it wasnt going to reach, so they grabbed a shorter rubber coupling that goes over the throttlebody. after getting the shorter throttle body the sensor fits now but a little snugger than what i wanted. im thinking of getting the harness extender still just for peace of mind.

anyways here's what it looks liek installed. i love the way it looks and sounds.

btw: i made them install it for me when i went to their shop, so i guess the 20$ i paid for shipping was an install fee

edit: ive put hose clamps on the blue tube since i took these pictures, after tugging on it very lightly, one end of the hose fell off and i didnt like that so i went to autozone and got some hose clamps for 2.50$

Just put a breather filter on that breather tube and plug the hole on the intake
