Samsung Moment. It probably isn't worth the time to root it. Im waiting to get a new phone, maybe an HTC Evo Shift 4G.

Yup, XDA is the "Bible" for modding your phone.

It's actually quite difficult to brick most modern phones. The vast majority of cases where people screw up and get their phone into a state where they think it's broken is because they didn't follow the directions for whatever they were doing or they got impatient and skipped a step. Even then it's almost always recoverable, just like when something's wrong on your truck a little searching and reading will usually lead you to a solution and if all else fails ask questions.
