rooting is pretty easy...
Here is the program I use on most android phones... 1-click root.

You simply plug in your USB cable. make sure you have the appropriate drivers so your computer see's your phone, open up SuperOneClick and click root. pretty easy. You can test your drivers within the application. Oh and for bolt, since he's a sissy... you can UNROOT with the click of a button too...
If you have received the OTA android 2.3.3 update... your boned for now.
after you root. get this program.

free wireless tethering. Also, once you root, you will be able to install custom ROMs aswell as any other fun program like setCPU... Overclock your phone. =)

It's actually quite difficult to brick most modern phones. The vast majority of cases where people screw up and get their phone into a state where they think it's broken is because they didn't follow the directions for whatever they were doing or they got impatient and skipped a step. Even then it's almost always recoverable, just like when something's wrong on your truck a little searching and reading will usually lead you to a solution and if all else fails ask questions.
