Default OBD-II readers

What kind of OBD-II code readers do yall use? Which ones are good, which ones should i stay away from? What features are good to have? New to these things and lookin to buy one. I dont and probably will never have a "smart phone". I wouldnt mind one that i can hook up with my PC either with or with out a wire. But just a handheld one would be nice too.

*Do they work with transmission codes, and can they tell me what the transmission temp gauge is reading?*

^^ Superchips. If not, there are plenty of cheap OBDII readers out there. I bought one off ebay a few years back for like $25 that reads and clears codes. Don't know if it works with trans codes.

Been using it in my car which has a manual, so I'm not sure. I've got it displaying inst MPG's, turbo boost, intake temp, and eng temp.
