Angry Time to dance for joy or cry?

I was just looking at a forum I found a few years back dedicated to diesel Jeep Liberties and found a thread claiming Dodge officially announced they will add a V6 diesel for the Ram 1500 next year (http://www.dieseltechmag.com/diesel-...&category=News .)
I know they have teased us with similar announcements before, but this one sounds legit as they also posted it here (http://www.ramtrucks.com/en/2014/ram_1500/ecodiesel/ .) My only wish is the Dakota line had "lived long enough to get it too."

My wife and I are looking hard at this upcoming Grand Cherokee diesel.
Tow stuff, haul kids, 4x4 to help pull the boat outta the water. Better mileage than a dakota as well.
I'm scared though. Ever hear of anything good from "Detroit Diesel"?
My buddy used to work on engines from them in Semi's... Says they were basically a 454 bottom end with diesel stuff for the heads and up. Horrid horrid engines. He's recommending I don't buy it since the engine is from them.
Also... another new transmission from Chrysler? No kidding...

I wish it was made by Cummins..I want a 4th gen Ram eventually and I would consider the '14 V6 diesel but a major influence would be who designed/produced it. Reliability is key..a diesel engine is supposed to last a million miles

What are you looking at that has the old Driptroit engines? They were garbage. They were diesel engines made to gas specs, which may look like it'd be okay on paper... but in the real world, they didn't hold up. Stay away from the 5.7L and 6.2L Detroits. Some people have had good luck with them, but I wouldn't suggest relying on them. Now, they were only put in Chevys/Olds/Cadillac/ect in the 80's and 90's for consumer use. They used them for a good while in the military, I even believe there are still some in HMMWV's in the military, but that's most likely a rare find.

These new diesels are from VM Motori,

http://www.freep.com/article/2013011...Grand-Cherokee

"The best-known American SUV brand will take the wraps off a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 3.0-liter diesel engine this morning at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The engine is made by VM Motori, an Italian engine manufacturer owned by Fiat."

VM motori is part of/used to be Detroit Diesel
Either way, he hasn't steered me wrong before, so I am wary. maybe just give it some time to work out bugs first.

Blu3pony, your buddy is so far off it isn't even funny.

Detroit Diesel bought VM Motori back in 95. Detroits aren't junk, they had the old 2 strokes that were louder than hell and underpowered, but they also have the Series 60 that is in countless over the road trucks. They also had the 6.2/6.5 in GM trucks from the early 80's up to '00. Underpowered but lasted.

Anyway, this 3.0L is much different than any of those Detroits, you might as well be comparing womens panties and clock radios.

Hmmmmm...
I actually showed the buddy some more information on the motor and he actually liked some of the tech they put in it vs most basic diesels.
Either way, I would prefer to see it out a year or two honestly.
