Yeah those are real. Some manufacturers put a little bit of Xenon in halogen bulbs and try to pass them off as HID but it's easy to tell. HID's require ballasts to run so anyone selling "hid bulbs" with no mention of a ballast is probably trying to rip you off. As for the Xenon, wikipedia explains it nicely:
HID stands for high-intensity discharge, the technical term for the electric arc that produces the light. Automotive HID lamps are commonly called 'xenon headlamps', because of the xenon gas used in the lamps. The xenon gas allows the lamps to produce minimally adequate amounts of light immediately upon startup and speed the warmup time.

Eric what brand did you get? I've had very good results in the past with Luminics bulbs, considering buying some ultra-whites for my headlights and fogs but I kind of want real HID's
