Default Problems!---HELP

Hey everyone I know I havn't been on in a while but I didn't have interent one month and among other things....theres the Air Force keeping me super busy.
Anyways this is actually one of those times where I need help with something on my truck I'm not just asking for opinions or being random...I need mechanic help! Thank God for you guys...
My truck ran out of gas last week....yah yah I know I'm dumb don't let it get low blah blah blah. I had a full truck of people and it ran out sooner than i thought.. But that got fixed quick we had help no prob.
The thing is....After that happened I've had MAJOR idle problems. And finally it wouldnt start....then it did and idled ROUGH and cut out 3 times... You guessed it...running out of fuel tore UP my fuel filter.
I barely made it back on base today without getting towed...What I need to know now is...how easy is it to replace a fuel filter, and how do I do it. I can't get it to a shop without towing it and that gets expensive in CALI. so...anyone done this or know how? I just wanna go to autozone and get the filter and replace it but sometimes it's not that easy. So, I ask you, can it be done with simple tools? I know some cars require dropping the gas tank to reach the filter...so...yah.
Thanks for reading and helping if you can! missed you guys! haha

your gonna get pissed, but the filter is attached to the bottom of the fuel pump. you need to drop the tank. but becarefull. first you need to unbolt the filler neck and let it hang. the good thing is the tanks are plastic so they dont weigh as much. drain out all the gas and drop the tank. another problem is that you might not have enough clearance if you dont lift truck. just becarefull when dropping tank because of the electrical and feed and return lines. also you will need to relieve the pressure. remove the fuel pump fuse and start truck until it dies. even though the truck had died on you it still may have pressure. . also. how do you know it is your filter? when you run out of gas. all you need to do is turn the key to on. not start. this will turn on the fuel pump and start to prime the system. do this a couple of times , then try and start truck. you may have just got air in the system. i never heard of chewing up a filter before. also try to reset the pcm. .it may be idling funny because of not resetting it.

ya, ours is one you have to drop the tank....

edit- also running it out of fuel can kill the pump. that might be a problem.

nice sig t-bird

thanx for the input superdak but im too inexperienced to mess with all that, i havta pay to get it done...HOWEVER...
I will try to do the PCM things and see if its electrical. I didn't mention this before but a cupple weeks ago, before i ran out of gas, whenever i idled down a hill in neutrel my steering cut out and i almost hit a bus. i tested it on an open road and did it again. I reset my negative and it was fixed, then happened once more, and i havnt had trouble since then so I dont know whats going on. I think my jet chip is messing with my system or something.
but anyways i will try the electrical 'fixes' and see if it gets any better, but I'm not driving it anywhere until I know it's not the fuel filter or injector.

Why does everyone always say to pull the cable for 20 minutes? It only takes seconds...
