In a c-clip axle if the shaft brakes the whole assembly comes out and you can't roll/be towed/or anything.

The only thing I know for sure is that if you order the 4.7L V8 on ANY trim in either 4x2 or 4x4 with part time transfer case, you'll get the 9.25 axle. No one seems to know for sure if the 4.7L V8 with Full Time 4 wheel drive gets the 9.25 or the 8.25 axle. Although the service manager at the dealership where I ordered my truck wasn't sure either, he talked to his mechanics who think that if it is true that Dodge is putting 8.25 axles in full time 4-wheel drive trucks, the reason may be that since part of the torque/power in an AWD truck is always going to the front axle, Dodge figures that they can get by with the 8.25 rear axles in 4.7LV8 Dakotas. Other than that, I still haven't gotten a definite answer yet.

I'm going to the dealer on Sat. to look at a TRX4, V-8, Part time 4wd. I will get it up on the lift & see for myself. I called Chrysler tech support today......they claim a TRX4 Quad cab gets an 8.25" 3.92 anti spin axle even if you get the 4.7....time to settle it with my own eyes. if a full time AWD unit comes in I will also check that out & let ya'll know

Just checked my 2006 TRX4 4.7 AWD I have 10 bolts back there which I am almost positive is the 8.25" rear...[:@] I also have the 3.92's which are part of the TRX4 package. Looks like they have been doing this for some time. Makes sensesince you are alway running the front axle too.
I dont know why the website is saying it can tow less I think its cause you can get a TRX4 with a v6 but not in the Larieme.

I posted this on the first page but I'll do it here again because sometimes previous posts get lost as others come in. The following is the exact wording from the 2008 Dodge Dakota Buyer's list of options:

"Axle - Rear, 9.25 (included with Flex Fuel V8 on 4x2 models or on 4x4 models with 4.7 Flex Fuel V8 and part-time transfer case)"

To me, this means that any Dakota ordered with a 4.7L V8 with either 4x2 OR 4x4 PART TIME transfer case gets a 9.25 axle. It also looks like any Dakota with a 4.7L V8 AND AWD will get the 8.25 axle. The 8.25 axle is listed as one of the standard items for 2008 models.

Came back from the dealer today; We looked at an '08 Dakota Quad TRX4 with 4.7 V8, tow package and part time 4WD. I crawled under the thing. It definitely has the the 12 bolt 9.25" 3.92 rear. Makes me happy...Looks like I'll be ordering my 4th DAK next week. I've previously owned an '87, '91 & '99...all were good trucks. If I see one with AWD I'll check it out & report back. Now I have to make up my mind Orange or Black ?????
