Let me try my hand at the size in English units:
275 is the width in mm
60 is the ratio of the height of the side of the tire from its rim to the end vs the width
17 is the diameter in inches of the rims.
So there's ~25.4 mm/inch, which means your tires are about (275/25.4) 10.8 inches wide.
The height of one of the sides is (60% of the 10.8) about 6.5 inches.
You have 2 (6.5 inch tall) sides and one 17 inch rim, so the total tire diameter is about (6.5+17+6.5) 30 inches.
This means you are looking for a roughly 11x30 inch tire with 17 inch rims. I suppose you could look around for a different rim size or width and wouldn't need to mess with the speedometer or gear ratios, but I assume going with a different width or ratio of side height to width would effect the ability of the tire to hold its shape in cornering, etc? I always assumed the the lower the ratio, the stiffer the tire would be and the better the handling, but I have not read anything to back that up (= I am just guessing.)
I'm not a tire guy though, so be sure to check before laying out any cash.

Yes, the lower the profile the better for handling AND the rougher ride.
Go to tirerack.comto shop for tires. You can't beat their prices or selection.
discounttiredirect.com is another one.

Discount Tire (if there is one locally) or DiscountTireDirect.com are a great places as well as TireRack.com. Depending on where you are there a number if places that are just as good with prices. Here in NJ we have ETD Discount Tire, Strauss Auto Centers and STS Tire Centers and Mavis Discount Tire in NY and CT. So I am sure you will find something at a decent price.

I just got my general grabber at2's from www.treaddepot.com.

they were 447 shipped. and then i got them mounted locally. they were 5$ more a tire than tire rack, but they do free shipping. so that by far outweighs.

by the way we had a snow storm last night and every school was canceled due to icy roads. thanks to the new tires, i didn't even have to think about needing 4x4. these things are awesome!
