Personally I've never been a fan of Pioneer's headunits. My friend has gone through a few of them in his old Ford and his S10, they just don't seem to last.
This one's pretty decent for the price:

If you're willing to go a bit higher this is also a really nice deal:

If you can spend a bit more Alpine really is the way to go:

Some people don't like JVC, based on my personal experience their Arsenal line is very good for the price range, my dad is still using the 6 year old Arsenal headunit I had in my chevy in his Ram with the Infinity system and it sounds great. In my Integra after that I went with a Kenwood Excelon (which everyone kept telling me was really good) that cost over twice as much and I was less happy with that than the JVC I gave to my dad.
The wire should be run under the carpet, where exactly depends on where the the subs will go. You want to find someplace to run them that it won't create a bump in the carpet or get stepped on either, some vehicles have a good space under the doorjams to run wire, some don't. I can't remember if ours did or not from when I had that pulled up.
