I installed the door jam clips and rack last week using the 38" screw spacing without issue. I was pleasantly surprised at how stable the rack felt. I assume the suggested 27" spacing corresponds with the load weight limits in the documentation. Since my main requirement is 1 or 2 kayaks I shouldn't be coming anywhere near the suggested weight limit of 165lbs.

Note: I took the truck for a 7 hour highway run with the rack off but with the door jam clips installed without noticing a difference . Looks like I'll be able to leave the clips in place as the owners manual suggests.
