Default Replacing shift cable- couple questions

Well, my new cable should arrive tomorrow and I have been reading up on replacing it in my Haynes manual.

The manual says to pry the cable off of the manual shift lever on the transmission. It then goes on to say that you should verify that the manual shift lever is in Park.

Well, here's my problem, I know it's not in park- it's in 1st.

So, can I move the manual shift lever..well, manually?

If I can't move it, the only other thing I can think of is moving the shifter into 1 before attaching the cable to the shifter. That way the tranny and the shifter will be in agreement.

Any info is appreciated.

Sean

put a pair of pliers on the tranny bracket and you will be able to move it into any position you want

It'll probably be easier if its in park because it more than likely exposes all the connections better. Like super said just grab hold of it and move it the all the way to the other end of the spectrum.

Sweet. Wish I had known that about a week ago so I didn't have to put a wheel chock under one of the tires and hope no one messed with it.

Wish me luck this evening when I get to work on it.

Do I need to jack the rear end up when doing this?

I can't get the thing to budge. It's an awkward grab for the thing, but I put some vise grips on it and still couldn't get it to move. I got the old cable off and man I hope the new one comes with the firewall grommet already on it since I don't see any way to get the old one off.

You might have to jiggle it, its not gonna be totally easy! You have a lever that does the work for you and you took that out of the equation. Make sure you are going the right way, I am not saying you are dumb but its easy enough to do. I been there. If you got it off then dont worry about shifting it until you are back together... and that grommet should stretch out and off. Use a couple screw drivers. Take it inside and warm it up. I doubt the new one has one...
