Which is better 87, 91 or 93 octane?
With the new headers in and exhaust I was expecting more of a kick than of what I got. Is it true that you will need to reset the trucks computer system in order to get the full benefits of having the headers in? I was wondering if putting a higher octane gas in my truck be of any benefit; as far as performance is concerned. I put in Gibson headers and Gibson one piece exhaust; single in dual out behind the tire. Thanks,
did you open up the y-pipe or is the factory one still there? if you still have the factory one in, you wont see much, if any gains. you wont need to reset the computer. i left the manifolds and just opened up the y-pipe, it made a difference. with my upgrades i run the 93 or better, 87 just wont work,

My HO responds to better gas like a baby does to candy. ANd the main difference from I know is only the headers. 87 only makes the truck feel like a small block V8, 89 feels more responsive on acceleration, and 91 is very very nice. But my HO manual also states my truck will run on 87-93, there is no preference set in it.

These trucks have a pair of knock (ping, detonation) sensors in the block valley, that will retard the timing and reduce performance upon sensing a "knock" condition that will occur more easily with a lower octane fuel. The higher octane rating increases the fuels resistance to exploding or pre-detonating, allowing the engine timing to stay on its peak advancement curve, and improving performance. This benefit will not be easily and immediately noticed upon switching to a higher octane fuel because the computer has learned when the condition occurs, and is not quick to change its ways. However, over time the computer will slowely increase timing advancement in accordance to the information that the knock sensors are providing. A good trick is to reset the computer so that it re-learns faster. Long story short, there is a definite, scientific benefit to regularly using higher octane fuel in these trucks.
