Default I would like to make an air dam.

I notice air dams are expensive, and the Dakota 2008 already has sort of an air dam, but I would like to make it more powerful of a dam, so can I just take some sheet metal or something like that, use some tin snips to bend some tabs, and then use a pop rivet tool to fasten my home made dam to the bottom of the factory dam. I don't plan on going off road, i only go on road, and i think with a proper aggressive air dam, the truck would stay glued to the road better, and mileage would go up. good? or bad?
How aggressive can I go with my air dam? ie. how many inches can I go - i was hoping 4-6 inches.
