That's a good point altair. I'd definitely try that as well. If that doesn't work, unhook the battery and leave it for about 20 minutes, hook it back up and drive it around for about 20 minutes nice and easy. Your computer should relearn your driving style and make adjustments.

Hi Guys,

I have a bit of a story to tell. First mine is quad 4X4 4.7 auto 3.92 gears and my comute is about the same as ihd's and in the winter on 87 octane i was getting 10.4 mpg. When warmer weather hit I upped to 89 octane had the dealer install new plugs and clean the TB. In a recent trip around New England totalling about 1000 miles in 3 days, I did achieve 17 mpg. No this still isn't great by any means but it does prove 2 things.... a proper tune and long drives on the highway will improve mileage BTW since my trip, my in town mileage has improved to 12.4 mpg... not good, but better than 10.

P.S. all mileage was converted to US gal

Two things you could do to further improve that are 1.) cold air intake and 2.) aftermarket exhaust. I saw quite a jump in mpg when I put my flowmasters on my Ram.

DON'T SIT AND IDLE! It is no good at all for the engine and while doing it you are getting 0 MPG which is bringing your overall average down. That is why you guys who live in freezing climates get worse winter mileage. My mileage drops in the summer because of the AC compressor running constantly. I average 19mpg in winter, 17mpg in summer; 350 miles per week with about 50 to 60 restarts, and I drive like Mario.

So if I'm at a light, should I cut off the engine even if it's just for 30 seconds?

I oughta look into this power thing. Anyone ever do a youtube video of this? Also, what do TPS, IAT, and EGR stand for (so I don't sound like an idiot when I talk to the mechanic)? DIY guides?

Thanks a bunch guys! Glad I found this forum!!

OK, for 30 seconds, but never more than a minute. I also NEVER use a drive-thru anything. I go inside to eat fast food lunch every day and I go inside to make my daily bank deposits.

Throttle Position Sensor, Intake Air Temperature, Exhaust Gas Recirculation, Do It Yourself.

Don't cut the engine at stoplights. Unnecessary wear and tear on the starter motor. The amount of gas you burn idling for a minute could easily be offset by driving just a little more conservatively. Don't drive around with unnecessary junk in the back. Keep your tires at 35-40 PSI. Give it a good wash and wax. Put some performance fluids in the motor, trans and axle. Much more sensible than beating the starter motor to death to save a thimble of fuel.

A two and a half ton vehicle can't escape the laws of physics...6cyl, 8cyl, whatever. Getting all that bulk moving with a 20-30% efficient piston engine requires alot of fuel.

Just rev it up to like 5,500 RPM and drop the clutch. You get to point A much faster, therefore, using less gas overall! haha

Default Gas mileage & idle

My 06 Quad 3.7 with 6 spd manual gets 17-18 mpg in around town driving and sometimes as much as 21 on highway trips, which are never done slowly. Generally highway mileage is about 18-19. In the couple of years I've had mine it has always and a funny roughness to the idle. Fresh plugs and throttle body cleaning have made no difference. It's just a slight stumble. I've seen no difference in performance between the NGK and autolite plugs.

Cheers,

Ken
