Default Loud tick / Light knock

Hey everyone. I just found this forum so here's my first post.

I have a 05 4X4 with the six cylinder. Started out as a lease when new and it treated me so good I decided to buy out the lease and finance the truck. From 05 to 08 I lived in Michigan but recently moved out here to Utah and have been using the truck at much higher elevation. It really seems to hate anything above 7500 or 8000 feet and that's without a trailer and a couple sleds!

It has developed a loud ticking noise while under load but it will only last for a few miles or so and it comes in and out speratically when at idle. It's hard to tell if it's coming from the top end or the bottom and the truck does not have an oil pressure gauge.

Any ideas or thoughts? Things to look at?

maybe look at a exhaust manifold leak. if its loud when started the heat expands it and it goes away when warming up.

Sounds like an exhaust leak but could be those lash adjusters too. Have ecm refreshed for high alt. Mopars have always ran poor in thin air but with an ecm controlling the engine you can do something about it easer.

My truck was a total turd anything about 2000FT on my trip to Yellowstone a couple weeks ago and really bad inside the park where it's between 5500 and 9000 feet, I'm glad it's only 500FT or less around here.

At least pull the positive battery cable and re-set the computer.

Check your plugs. Replace them anyways with copper only plugs. Platinums knock slightly and it would only get worse with elevation, so check it out. I got an extra MPG outta replacing them anyways.

Thanks for all the replies! Plenty of ideas to look into..much appreciated.

Admittedly the truck does need a good tune up. Still has the factory plugs and it's showing over 75K for miles. I started thinking about the exhaust manifold this morning and thought maybe it was something that has been suggested, like heat expansion.

Hahns5.2 - I hear ya! In the winter headed up the mountain to get to the ski resort I'm in low 1 four wheel HI trying to keep the RPM's below 4000. If I leave it in low 2 it constantly shifts in and out.

I just picked up some Goodyear Wrangler TD's 265 75 16's and I'd love to try them out but I'd like to get the truck running right first.
