Pics of rear diff fluid change

Truck had 39,000 miles with no fluid change. It was due. Got at least 4 tylenol sized scoops of metal particles from the bottom magnet. Took me at least an hour to remove the old RTV. I felt like i was scratching it with anything metal, so ended up using my thumb nail for most of the work. Took longer than I expected, but wanted everything to be as clean as possible. I was going to use brake cleaner to clean the gears out, but was advised against it at OReily's. They said that it used to be a great idea, but regulations forced the use of non-chlorinated substances which will leave a slight residue behind.I didn't check labels or read any further into it though.. I ended up just flushing out the gears with Royal purple, as I had to buy 3 bottles and only use 2.13L of the total 2.838L anyways. I let it sit for about 20 hours after sealing everything back up with the RTV, test drove it and cant find any leaks.
I was a little worried about the smell of the old oil at first, I thought that it smelt burnt. But the new royal purple smelled almost as bad. Do you see any excessive wear from the photos?

Looks good. I'm assuming you don't have 4wd. If not count your blessings the front diff is a PITA. Next time I suggest dropping your spare tire to give you the extra room. I could sit indian style under the truck which made it much easier.

Just a little advice. Dry fit the front cover MANY times to make sure you see how it goes on. It only slides in one way I believe. Good Luck! Oh and see if you can pick up a brass brissle brush. That will make the work go alot smoother and you wouldn't have to worry about scraping off the old RTV with your fingernails.

Default 3 questions

3 questions about the gear oil change:

1. Did you use 75w-140, or is 75w-90 O.K?
2. My manual says that capacity is less than 2 liters; how much did you put in?
3. My differential is limited slip. Is the "additive" a must?

Thanks.

scotch brite pad works real good for removing the rtv.
i use brake cleaner for flushing the diff. just get it all out and allow it to dry.

use the scotch brite first, then flush with brake cleaner. it helps flush the little specs of rtv that get everywhere.

your gears look fine.

YES, unless you use some super-duper royal purple or something that specificially says it contains the LSD friction modifier..
