car audio subs are quite different than home audio... I am sure you know that already.
I installed and fabricated for a few years, With the michigan winters MDF with liquid nails or caulk would expand and contract so much, that sealed enclosures would eventually leak. So to get around it, we started sealing them with fiberglass resin mixed with a little body filler.
If you do decide to get into mobile audio enclosures, I would pick a couple subwoofers that you like and build for them, then suggest those for the enclosures. you can make a great sub sound like crap in the wrong box.

I picked up a Pioneer self powered tube sub today. It's an overseas model a few years old that I got cheap.
200w max, 100w RMS with an ~8" sub. Halfway through installing it now. Decided to go ahead and take out the pass. side jump seat and put it there, strapped in. Just a tad too big otherwise. Assuming the unit is in working order, I'm hoping it will be enough. If it isn't, it was a cheap gamble.

Installed and working great. Really glad I scoured craigslist for it.
I'm also really glad I did the dynamat and soundproofing a while back, it had to have helped. The sub hits/booms pretty hard inside for what it is and it's more than enough for me, but is hardly noticeable outside of the truck (almost oddly so). Exactly what I wanted.
I will spend part of the weekend tracking down little rattles now. Picked up some adhesive foam tape that should help.
