Default Rack and Pinion Question

Does anyone know if the rack and pinion can be adjusted (tightened up)? I have already replaced the tie rod ends and there is still play in the rack. Its not in any of the steering couplers or the rag joint.

Really not looking forward to replacing the rack.

Well since know one has posted anything yet i am heading to the dealer tomorrow to get the lower ball joints replaced again since the boot are torn. At least they are under warranty they only been on for 6 months(third set). I will ask them about the rack and let you know what i come up with.

Eimer123,
I have no idea what it could be. I looked at a database thats included in my school tuition and the only problem noted for steering is a clunk, and it involves replacing the rack and pinion. Good luck!

The first two steering racks in my dakota were duds.....

But I also had to have a intermediate shaft replaced in steering column. It made the wheel feel like there was play it it, and came along with what felt like a "hump" in the steering smoothness. A few guys had to have em done on here.

Good luck.

Just got back from the dealer which was ridiculous, how ever they got a 5 star rating i have no idea. 4.5 hours for a customer to wait for a single install of a ball joint?? That is outrageous. Its not like they had to wait for the part they had it in stock. Also they must know how to do them this is my 4th one.

Got the info on the rack, there is no way of tightening the play in the rack. looks like i will be looking for a new one. Do they make a heavy duty version?

If its still under warranty, explain that you want it fixed. It isnt safe and thats what a warranty is for.

Just remember to be really nice .... otherwise they will do as little as possible to help you. Normally you can get what you want if you are patient enough.
