disconnecting front drive shaft
is it possible to disconnect the front drive shaft on the all wheel drive system? my gas mileage is starting to suffer and i wanna have some rear wheel drive fun in the summer. i tried to pull the fuses and nothing. please help me
I looked into this after I bought my AWD truck since I was considering the possibility of dropping the half-shafts (for better mileage and better performance by technically turning the truck into a 2WD) and this is what I found out.
According to the service manager at my dealer, he says it will likely make the computer throw all kinds of codes. I'm not entirely sure that's the case though since, from my understanding, it's a wheel slippage/torque type setup in the transfer case. If anything, it might jack the computer up being that it supposedly senses rear wheel slip and transfers power to the front wheels to compensate. At least that's how it was explained to me. After hearing his take on it, I just scrapped the whole idea.
I'm sure there are other members here with a much better understanding of how the system works and can probably shed a lot more light on it than I can.
