A couple points about retreads...

Quite a lot of semis run them, but the last I knew they are only legal on non-steering axles.

Anyone who spends any amount of time on interstates knows all too well about retreads skins littering the highways. I realize our trucks don't weigh 80,000lbs, but separation is separation, regardless.

Actually you can run them on a steer axle you just dont want to. I work for a comerical tire shop and we put retread steer tires on UPS and garbage trucks all the time.

Backwoods dont buy retreads they come apart all the time trust me i see it every day. If you want to save money on tires look at the dakota tires from pepboys or the NEXEN m/t. Im sure theres alot more out there but thats all i can think of at the moment.

heres my input....I have had my retreads for about a year now and im liking them, two other people at my work are running two different tread designs and there lookin pretty good too.

About how there gonna hold up any person who would happen to buy retreads should know to give them a look over once a week or two on there condition...compared to big rigs yeah they weigh thousands of pounds more than our mid size daks and put many many more miles on them and i wouldnt run them past the legal wear bars anyway(like alot of semis do)

i paid like $410 to the door (shipping could cost more for others like posted above) compared to a similar tread made my cooper, there stt's of the same size run around $840 w/o tax.

Personally I don't trust them. When it comes to my tires if a little extra reassurance and quality is going to cost me more I'll take the hit in the wallet. In terms of both performance and safety tires are one of if not the single most important component, don't feel bad about spending a little more for them.

I have never used on my truck, but have used in commercial vehicles, and some of my farm play toys. I don't think the blow out thing is as big of a deal as the big rigs etc. Big weight difference on the tires. A blow out can happen anytime running any tire. That being said, my insurance deductible is a grand. I can run four new tires for half that, and I am in Canada. I will also not risk the damage to my vehicle from running bad rubber. A blow out will do more damage then just a new tire replacement. Think about that!

We have been using retreads for the farm toys, track fun, and commercial vehicles for years. Have always had minor issues, but our speeds never got to hi-way. I am not sure I would trust retreads on a typical bumpy, tire busting pot hole road. Then again, I drive my truck like a truck. Hence why I never put them on.

Ok, thanks for the input guys. I just want to state that I am not trying to be "cheap" ( no insult intended for guys who run them), I am just looking to save a buck or two if I can. That's all. If any body else has any input, please post...

Best way to save some it to buy the off branded tires (most are in conjunction with the brand name tires)

Just curious, but is the speed rating on retreads the same as factory tires?
