Unhappy Check Engine light finally came on

After all of these transmission problems it was only a matter of time. It threw three codes. Hopefully you guys can give me some insight. I know I already discussed getting a tranny from a salvaged truck for cheap. Now that I have the codes and the check engine light is on, I think it's time for me to actually dish out the cash...

So, here's the codes I have. Let me know your thoughts and if anybody knows a good tranny mechanic in the east valley of the phoenix metro area, please let me know!

P0700
P0871
P0882

Thanks in advance!

Trouble Code: P0700
Automatic Transmission Control System Malfunction
Trouble Code Conditions:Ignition on or engine started. The PCM received a message over the CCD Bus from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) that it had detected a problem and set a trouble code in memory.
Possible Causes:
  • The presence of this code means the TCM detected a problem
  • TCM related Sensor has solenoid is damaged or has failed
  • This code is for information only - check for other TCM codes
  • TCM or PCM has failed

Trouble Code: P0871
A/T O/D Pressure Switch Circuit Malfunction
Trouble Code Conditions:Engine started; vehicle driven in a forward gear, and the PCM detected that the O/D Pressure Switch circuit indicated open or closed at the wrong time.
Possible Causes:
  • Related DTCs may be present
  • O/D pressure is incorrect, or internal transmission faults exist
  • O/D pressure switch circuit is open, shorted to ground or power
  • O/D pressure switch is damaged or it has failed
  • TCM relay power circuit to O/D switch is open

When I got that code, my trans would feel like it was slipping when it was cold and the rpms would rise whenever I took off from a light. I replaced the fluid and filters, and got a new pressure sensor and it all went away. Less than $200.

I've had good luck with airpark dodge in Scottsdale. They were good to me when I bought my truck and gave me 3 free oil changes

@eimer: thx for the descriptions.
@rengnath: I don't really get much slipping. The tranny has been slower to engage when it's been sitting for a few hours (from p to r and r to d). I also get a "shudder" that seems to come from the torque converter at highway speeds when it (dis)engages for the first time. Also, my tranny fluid overheating light has been coming on lately (per recent threads of mine). I dropped the pan, replaced the filters and fluid a few weeks ago.
@marc: hmm, aren't they far north scottsdale? I work in scottsdale but it's at the scottsdale/tempe border off of scottsdale road.

@rengnath: What pressure sensor are you talking about? Part#?

Thanks.

K. I talked to a tranny shop this morning and over the phone the guy seems to believe it's some type (he knew which one) of solenoid that sits on top of the tranny that needs to be replaced. Because none of the codes I threw were mechanical related, he believes that the issue is electrical.

He says the "solenoid" is like $400 plus 1.5 hours of labor. Is $400 for a solenoid BS? If so, what solenoid is he talking about?

Thanks.

UPDATE: I had the solenoid replaced. Truck ran great for 100-200 miles. I unplugged the battery, let it sit for an hour or so, plugged it back in...and BANG, the trans temp light came on.

I took the truck back to the shop and they're looking at it now. My question is...I don't think the shop unplugged the battery after replacing this solenoid. Is the truck acting "smart" and throwing the code again w/o really meaning it?

The trans shop said they checked the trans temps when the light came on, and they show NORMAL.

Is this a simple computer flash or something?

Problem is when the light comes on the truck goes to limp mode and runs like a dog.

Thanks!
