Default Brake Controller

Hi all,

I just bought a tent trailer with electric brakes and now need a brake controller. Any recommendations? I've never used one before so I have no idea what is good and what isn't.

Thanks!

Your going to need the harness adapter to hook up the controler. It only came on daks that have a towing package. If you have a towing package the connector should be under the dash board somewhere behind the center console.

Oreilly sells the hays brand.
64.99 for the 81725 and 81.99 for the 81741b. The harness adapter 081782hbc it sells for 21.99.

If you have the tow package, the adapter should have come with the truck, or atleast mine did.

I'm refering to the adapter between the factory tow plug and the controler. Ford, chevy, and dodge all use different plugs.

Yes same here, the harness adapter that has 4 wires and a connector on one end that plugs into the pre-installed outlet connector and then to the brake controller.
Like so...

*EDIT*
Nevermind I, gotcha, I thought you were calling out the factory adapter, not the one inbetween the factory and the controller... my bad.

Carry on

We use a Prodigy: proportionally based, no need to worry about leveling, easy to adjust. Not to diminish the value of the information given on this forum, but here is a thread from another forum on brake controllers with some info: http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fu...g/1/page/1.cfm

Thanks all. The proportional system seems to be the way to go and I've now seen Prodigy mentioned in many different things I've read. I'm sure glad my truck has the factory tow wiring. It will save me a lot of time and aggravation.

I run a Prodigy nice and simple, I have no need for all the gismos that some of the fancy ones come with. My truck did not come with the factory harness, I ran my own relay so it does not effect any of the truck lights (not sure if the factory does if you have a trailer with lots of lights).
