Question 16" or 17" wheels?

So I was at 2 different tire shops here in town and it is really difficult to get tires for my 18" rims, well the tires I want, Firestone Destination A/T.

Was told the 255/70/18 were on back order and would be months before would even be made. The stock 265/60/18 would have to be direct shipped in for an extra $100, which I'm not doing.

We have them on my wife's Explorer, based on tire rack survey and they have been great tires.

So, now I am thinking of getting 16" or 17" wheels for easier tire access. It would be cheaper to just pay for the extra shipping, but I'd just have to go through this again later. I could just order online and pay about the same for shipping.

Would like to know your thoughts on what size wheels you have and tire choices. 90% of my driving is city and highway. My off road use is 90% gravel, with occasional true off road use. I am concerned about the 4 ply rating on these tires too.

All opinions greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ray

I would go with 16s. The tires will be cheaper than 17s or 18s. Plus you get more tire for the money. With 16s you'll have a smoother ride. That's my 2 cents anyway

Yea like Marc said ^ I would go with 16's as well. More sidewall for a smoother ride plus there are tons of tires sizes available

If you like the wheels that you have, just go with a different tire. If you're looking for an excuse to get new wheels, go for it.
There's not too much of a difference with either the 16" or 17" tire, as far as driving comfort is concerned. 16" tires will be a little bit cheaper than 17's.

Don't forget to get proper backspacing on the new rims. If you go with 16's it's important to test mount the rim on the front to make sure the rim does not bind up against the caliper. I would do this before mounting tires on rim, there are a lot of aftermarket 16" rims that don't clear the calipers even though they say they'll fit the Dak. 17's will have no clearance issues.
