Default Cruise Control Problems

Folks,

The cruise control doesn't work my my 2005 Dakota SLT Sport. I'm hoping ya'll can help point me in the right direction.

The cruise control turns on (At least the cruise light comes on) when I press the ON/OFF button. However, the cruise will not set. I can press the button all day long and it does nothing. In an effort to knock out the cheapest, easiest solution first, I replaced the switch. The replacement didn't resolve the problem.

That's what I know for sure.

I'm assuming that this isn't the vacuum setup as it should cause problems maintaining speed but it shouldn't prevent the system from setting a speed.

I'm also assuming that the problem isn't related to the servo as the servo is controlled by the computer and doesn't have the ability to "set" the speed.

Can ya'll think of anything else that may be causing the problem? Is there anything common with this generation of trucks that I should be looking out for?

I appreciate any help that you can provide!

Thanks!

Scott

Just a quick question before getting to the troubleshooting: Did you buy the truck used and it hasn't worked since you got it, or did it work for you before but it just stopped working? If it hasn't worked since you've had it, we can go through a more detailed troubleshoot to make sure all the parts and proper connections are in place and correct. But in the meantime, we can knock out the obvious first:

-Had you recently serviced the throttle body and forgot to re-connect the cruise control cable?

-Have you checked for a vacuum leaks?

-After pressing the ON button and seeing "CRUISE", are you pressing the SET button?

Erau,

"Did you buy the truck used and it hasn't worked since you got it, or did it work for you before but it just stopped working? "

It has not worked since I purchased it. I neglected to test it during the test drive. :-(

"Had you recently serviced the throttle body and forgot to re-connect the cruise control cable?"

No.

"Have you checked for a vacuum leaks"

On a basic level, yes. That may or may not mean anything. I plan on doing some more advanced testing this weekend, when I get home (My office is 250 miles from home so I don't have all of my tools handy at the moment).

"After pressing the ON button and seeing "CRUISE", are you pressing the SET button?"

That's correct. I'm amused that you asked that question. My first assumption was that the idiot behind the wheel was doing something stupid. My tests so far have largely ruled that out but it's always an option. :-)

Last night, I ran through the diagrams on alldata's web site and I THINK all of the electrical connections have been made properly. I didn't cut the wire bundles open but I did trace the wires as best as I could without breaking the bundle. I also checked the servo to make sure that it was connected properly and all of the hoses looked good and I didn't hear or feel any leaks (Of course that may mean nothing).
