Default Wheel well notches

I have a 2006 Dakota and in the bed of the truck, the wheel wells have a 'notch' in the insides. It almost looks like you could put a 2x6 from the one wheelwell to the other. Does anyone know what this was designed for?

Thanks
Shawn

This is common on most trucks. the design is so that you can lay a 2x6 cross ways, and place somthing in the front and the back to take up space to make it level. Then you can put something flat in that is more than 4' wide without bending it....voila!

Default Thanks!

Thanks to all. It makes sense now, and the picture really showed it well.
