update here, after a couple weeks of no problems, driving/towing etc, with this hhr / derale setup , i had problems last night.
going home in a wicked storm/heavy rain the truck started overheating. at first ,i noticed just a little higher on the gauge for a while , then it started climbing quick.

so i quickly pulled into a parking lot , shut it down. put the key in the run position & the fan was NOT working. started checking connections etc

after wiggling the inline fuse that came with the derale controller the fan started working perfectly again.

fired it back up , gauge quickly dropped back to normal so i went home.

this am with daylight, im checking things out. the derale inline 30 amp fuse didnt blow, but the fuse plastic was melted .

at this point , im not 100 % sure if that was the cause, or the effect of something else .

ive driven this setup in rain before, but not the super heavy water across the road stuff like last night.

im figuring something got wet that normally wouldnt.

the derale inline fuse holder is cheaply made & pretty cheesy looking.

im going to get a better, water tight one from advance auto. probably going to relocate the controller inside the cab too .

i also think maybe that fuse should maybe replaced by a circuit breaker instead. if it got hot, it could reset itself then.but im not sure on that since the derale has the fuse on the leg that connects to the negative wire on the fan for some reason.http://static.summitracing.com/globa.../der-16749.pdf

at any rate, if you use the derale controller it might be a good idea to replace the cheap inline fuse holder with a better one. maybe some one else here has already tried the circuit breaker, idk. any thoughts?

I pack all my connections with Dielectric Grease, So it repeals water, Dirt, and prevents corrosion from getting to my connections. Its non-conductive, so it wont short either.

thats a good idea, & i had actually thought about that & didnt have any handy during the install , then forgot about it.

remembered it again last night though, when my **** was getting soaked in the parking lot, lol.

im still going to replace the inline fuse holder. & perhaps getting the fan controller away from the under hood heat may be a good idea anyways.

im kinda curious why derale does their wiring like they do fused on the negative side.
other schematics for different brand controllers show a cct breaker on the + side & the fan - neg going to ground. perhaps its something different with their a/c overide part of the relay.

ordered the hhr fan connector to replace my rigged connection http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...&parttype=2556
for that weather tite seal

also , relocated the derale controller, going inside the cab looked like a pain in the butt,so i figured inside the cai shield would be ok since it was dusty & looked dry in there.

unplugged the relay & connector so it all got a good dose of dilectric grease in the contacts. also siliconed outside where the wires go into the white derale connector.

for future reference though...never, ever work on anything when youre sick( like me sunday w/ a killer ear infection/half dizzy) & not 100%.

cause if you do, you might just leave the cap to a tube of silicone around the motor, fire it up to test things.
& that cap could fall, hit the fan & then shoot a hole into the radiator ( lucky it didnt go into the a/c condenser)........dont ask me how i know.....

so, since the rads gotta come out, ill probably do the 180 t-stat,replace the hoses etc.
but, at least i might get a Christmas card from rockauto this year
