Default Intermittent Transmission Temp Light

05 Dakota Laramie, 4.7L (non-HO) auto, fulltime awd - 108K miles: Have had the Transmission temp light come on intermittently for the last week or so. soon as it comes on I pull over & shift to park shut off the ignition and re-start and the light is off. Does this almost daily. Strangely, took a freeway trip 6 days ago, 260 miles round trip 65-70 mph and the light never came on once. First time it happened about 10 days ago, it wouldn't upshift to OD that hasn't happened since. No sign of slippage, seems to shift fine up and down, trans fluid (serviced 5,000 miles ago) shows no signs of burning or overheating. Level is up, look nice and pink, no burned smell or brown color.......Electrical glitch, or what?? NO OBD II CODES ARE COMING UP AT ALL!

If it is the little red light the comes on in the centre of the speedo, mine does it too. Has done it for the last two or three years, just comes on, and then goes out in less than a minute. My engine temp guage is normal, no leaking fluids, nothing.

I never bothered to look deeper into it, as it only happens in the summer months. I assume its just a fault, as my truck runs fine, and I have no other issues in this regard.

That happened to my 06 4.7 HO about 10 months ago. Transmission shops said the tranny was in great shape, just an electrical problem. I ended up replacing a TCM (transmission control module?) and when that didn't work I replaced my PCM (per dodge's recommendation) and that took care of the problem. I'm at 108k now and my tranny feels just as solid when I bought it with 40k!

I might recommend taking it straight to dodge, pay the $100 diag, and at least see what it is. Remember, you can get PCMs online for 1/3 the price of the dealer and it take 10 minutes to change.

POPSNBEER, what is the "PCM"? If it only takes 10min to change, if it aint too costly I'll just go ahead and take a chance & change it, rather than pay my shyster dealer shop a hundred bucks.....

I would also verify that the filter used in your service was the right one. There is a TSB regarding a trans filter that would cause slow shifting and pressure build up. (increased pressure would also increase heat.)

Default FINALLY got OBD codes....

Day before yesterday OBD finally threw me a couple of codes. Had Trans Temp light come on, then 2 sec. later the "check engine" light came on....had the OBD2 in the back seat, so pulled over & plugged in: Read out P0876 ("Trans Fluid Pressure sensor switch 'D' circuit range/performance") and P0700 ("Trans Control System, MIL Request"). Erased codes, no lights for 2 days....Sound like TCM going bad? Open for suggestions........

Know little about the subject, but I'd be looking real hard at that pressure switch first.

Thank you everyone for your responses.....at least I have a place to start. Can anybody tell me just where the TCM & PCM are located and where I can find installation procedures?

Look at the stickies, there is a service manual that's downloadable, or should be. If not let me know.

The computers are located on the passenger side behind the air box. The TCM is within the PCM
