Default New diff for me? Rediculous...

I was driving my truck today and started noticing a whining noise which sounded like it was coming from the rear end. At first I thought maybe it was just tire noise, until I could still here it on dirt and gravel roads. Once I got home I put the rear on stands and confirmed that this is coming from my rear diff. Here's a video.

For some reason the embedded vid isn't showing video for me, just audio. If it's not working for you just click on the link if you want to see the vid. Sounds what's important anyway.

Anyways, it's pretty rediculous that I'm going to be replacing/rebuilding this rear end with only 70k miles on it, which has had the appropriate fluid changes and little abuse...

I've had to replace two of them. Last one didn't make it 50k miles. Did all the fluid stuff as well.

maybe take advantage of the situation and find a full float 14B or dana 70 and throw it under there. I dont know if there are any tone rings or anything these trucks need but if not, put a beast up under it. You would need to get wheel adapters to convert the bolt pattern to the proper one (make it a thin spacer) then possibly some 2" spacers for the front so the axle widthes would be the same. Then you are a 1/4 way to the SAS you always wanted

Very sad indeed. I just hit 80,000 and my pinion bearings went also front and rear. Never abused, never offroad, fluids changed every 15,000

It would be something to consider, but I'm still under my extended warranty and it should be replaced under that. If I did have to pay for this I'd most likely be switching the truck to 3.92 lsd, since I have 3.55 with an open rear right now.

Dealer diagnosis is failed pinion bearings, so they want to replace all the bearings in the rear end. So it looks like I get off without replacing the whole thing. Now if I can get my warranty company to stop dragging their feet.

Is your warranty company one of those extended ones you get flyers for in the mail?

My pinion bearings went @101K..... I know how you feel. And the guy messed up and the truck makes some awful noise. Getting my 2nd set of gears in a few weeks.

No, it's actually a pretty good warranty that I bought extra when I bought the truck, but just about any company in that business will try to get out of paying if they can. It's covered and fixed, so I'm picking it up tomorrow. Now I just need them to reimburse me for my rental.
