Default Low range light blinking while driving

I've got a friend with an '05 Dakota and he says that randomly while driving down the highway the 4wd Low Range light will flash half a dozen times or so, but the truck never hesitates, clunks or anything else, and eventually the light goes back off. This happens while in 2wd that he's noticed, not sure about driving while in 4wd high. Anyone ever heard of this? I didn't know what to tell him, so I've been researching it and have come up empty. (Unless it blinks while trying to shift into low, then it'll blink while it tries shift gears, but then goes solid) Thank you for any advice, or info.

Jared

To me, it sounds like the 4wd switch might be having a problem and is providing a momentary connection for 4 Lo selection. If all the rest of the system is working correctly, there will be no clunk or any other sensation unless the truck is at a standstill & in neutral (I think that's the way to select 4 Lo, but at least you need to be standing still). If there's nothing wrong with the switch, there might be a problem with a connector or a wire that would cause the same effect.

I was thinking the switch may be at fault. I haven't heard of any Dodge 4wd switches failing like the GMs do, so I was thinking I'd ask here first. I'll have him check the wiring near the transfer case, but I'll tell him the switch is more likely the culprit. Any one ever had to replace one?

If he's in the mood for checking, I'd suggest he also follow the wiring from the switch to the control unit, looking at any connectors and wires that may be chafed causing an intermediate short as the vibrate against a ground point. Anything that's imbedded in a large part of the harness can probably be ignored for now, I'd be looking for the 1 or 2 wire combinations that stretch from a device to the main loom. An intermittent fault is often hard to find.

Well, after doing some more research, I had him pull the #8 fuse, which shut off his dash, so he decided to put it back in, and unplug the a/c high pressure cutoff switch (according to the research that switch is in the same circuit as the transfer case motor and has been known to go bad, which causes voltage drop to the transfer case motor)to see if that'll stop the blinking. He left for ice fishing up north, I told him to stop by a dealership on the way and have them plug it in, so we'll see what happens he gets back. I'll post back the fix.
