Default Power Steering Pump: How can I tell if it's bad?

So, I think I've reached that point. My baby just turned 117K miles and I'm noticing all the little things that come up that need to be fixed or relplaced.

Last week I noticed that it takes a little more effort to make turns and coming out of a turn instead of just naturally letting the steering slide through my hand to straighten out I have to turn it myself.

I checked my power steering fluid, recently had entire front end suspension replaced, to include the steering rack and pinion. Belts are also fine. Glanced over the linkage and didn't notice anything obviously out of place (not that I really knew what to look for).

So, I'm under the assumption at the moment that my power steering pump might be starting to die, partially because I well I can't think of anything else and about a month prior I started to notice that when I had to turn the wheel to almost one extreme or the other when parking I could noticeably hear a whining from under the hood.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

it could be a pump... but I would try to lube up the joint in the steering linkage first. (the one that comes from the wheel, through the engine bay, on the drivers side.) It looks like a little U-Joint. those corrode and cause your wheel to stick a bit. its free to spray it with some WD and try it out. at very least you could rule that part of it out.
