Default 2005 Dakota 3.7 Transmission Issues

Hopefully I'm posting this in the right area.

My son has a 2005 Dakota 4 Door with a 3.7 V6 in it. Don't know what transmission this brings, but lately we've had this problem.

Driving on highway and going up a grade/hill and when accelerating, the trans kicks down. Right around that time the CEL comes on. Now the trans WILL NOT UPSHIFT and we're doing 55 at 4000 rpm. If we pull over and turn of the Ignition and wait a few seconds and then turn it on again, shifts perfectly...until next time you hit the gas and go into "Passing Gear".

Now I understand the truck has 164,00 miles on it, but what do I need to change here? Have read a lot about it, but nothing was specific to my situation here.

I'm pretty good with a wrench. From what I've gathered, there may be a solenoid (One of many) which I may need to change? Don't have a scan tool, but have that "CarMd" BS given to me by a friend.

Open to suggestions.

Ken

I will move this to the 3rd generation Dakota sub-forum.

Take it to a local auto parts store and have it scanned for the DTC. Whether or not the CEL is on, the code should still be stored.

+1. The code will usually help you/us narrow down the issue. FYI, the 3.7L V6 is mated to a 42RLE transmission.

Ok. I plugged in the "CarMD" just to see what it says and the below is what it told me.

Stored codes are conditions that your vehicle reported after your Check Engine light was set. CarMD uses these codes to accurately identify a most likely repair or "Cure". Retrieved Diagnostic Code: P1776 Technical Definition: A/T Solenoid Switch Latched In Low/Reverse Position Areas to Inspect - Possible Causes: Related DTC P0841 may be present. Intermittent wiring or connector problems L/R pressure switch sense circuit is open, shorted to ground or to voltage Extremely low battery (system) voltage Transmission pan has debris caused by valve body damage Transmission internal problems, SSV sticking, or valve body damage PCM has failed
Condition For Setting The Code: Engine started; vehicle driven to over 30 mph and the TCM detected the L/R switch was closed while performing partial or full PEMCC or FEMCC. Additional Resources In some instances your vehicle's manufacturer may issue a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) to address this problem. (?) Issued TSB? TSB Not Available Retrieved Diagnostic Code: P0700 Technical Definition: Automatic Transmission Control System Malfunction Generic Definition: This fault code indicates the Comprehensive Component Monitor (CCM) has detected that after the ignition was turned on and/or a predetermined period of operation, a malfunction was detected in the transmission control system, and the Transmission Control Module (TCM) sent a signal to the vehicle's computer requesting that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) be turned on. Areas to Inspect - Possible Causes: The presence of this code means the TCM detected a problem TCM related Sensor has solenoid is damaged or has failed This code is for information only - check for other TCM codes TCM or PCM has failed
Condition For Setting The Code: Ignition on or engine started. The PCM received a message over the CCD Bus from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) that it had detected a problem and set a trouble code in memory. Additional Resources In some instances your vehicle's manufacturer may issue a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) to address this problem. (?) Issued TSB? TSB Not Available
Can anyone make any sense of this or do I need a more "Comprehensive" Data Scan?

Thanks,

Ken
