Adding Overhead Console, Auto-dim Mirror w/UConnect to 2006 SLT
Other people have tried to order the bracket in the past with limited success. The part number was pretty easy for me to find on the parts diagrams.
The part number I ordered and successfuly installed is 55361301AA. That part looks like this (note the yellow areas, these are what are different than the stock bracket):

It looks nearly identical to the stock bracket that came in my truck with the dome light, like this:

The overall shap is identical for the two brackets. The difference is in the inside positioning of the brackets that I've highlighted in yellow.
The console snaps in to the two smaller holes that I highlighted on the left side of the top picture. The square hole on the far right of the bracket in the middle is where the screw hole of the console fits.
In that square hole I took one of the snap in mounts that came with my new bracket and put it in to that square hole to give me something to screw in to. I could do this because the stock bracket already had all four clips installed in the roof. Now I have three spares of the clips. This is a poor picture but this is what it looks like:

If you don't have the exact bracket in my top picture (55361301AA) you probably have the wrong bracket.

With some pressure, push and it snaps in to the holes.

Do the metal tab clips match up to the holes in the bracket? They are pretty universal. I have a spare console that I paid $50 for incase something is wrong with one.
CHRYSLER/DODGE consoles with dome lights (not the sunglass holder long version) are for the most part universal. They cover a large rang of models and years.
I don't know, maybe he thought you meant Durango?
According to the product fitment/application guide located here http://www.factorychryslerparts.com/...BZ08BD1AA.html your vehicle should take the same overhead console as my 2006 truck.
Also, according to this fitment/application guide here http://www.factorychryslerparts.com/...5361301AA.html the bracket you purchased is the correct bracket.
Now, the issue you have is the console you bought won't fit the bracket. I suppose you could find a Durango with a square console and try to pull the bracket and HOPE it fits your Dakota (your visors attach to it).
If I were you I would check all of the local (and not so local) you-pull or you-pick salvage yards like LKQ close to you. You can snag the round style console from a early model Durango, 2nd gen Dakota (99 - 04), 3rd Gen Dakota (05 - ??), some Jeeps and some Chrysler/Dodege cars and vans. Take a screw driver and some wire cutters and just unscrew, pull and snip the wire.
I went to a few LKQ yards in my area (http://www.lkqpickyourpart.com/) and I could have easily snagged several consoles. Most LKQ locations allow you to search their yard inventory to see if they have any matching vehicles before you go.
You could also use http://www.car-part.com and search for "console" as the part and on the second screen put in your own custom year range. That will find local salvage yards where they pull the part for you. You will have to swap between models (Durango and Dakota) but you should be able to find one. These places generally charge more than LKQ since they get the part for you but at least you can call to verify they have it.
You could also go back to eBay, find the RIGHT one and wait for it to arrive.
