I am going to the jack yards this weekend to find a 2005 Dakota with the v6 and a 42rle trans. But if I can't find one what other auto may have one. I need it to be 2 wheel drive. I need to take mine out and put one in so I can drive my truck as I rebuild the old one. It has over 270,000 mile on this one.

 

you don't have to use a 2005 dakota, any 3rd gen should be ok. As for 2WD vs 4WD transmissions, the only difference on a 2WD is that you have a tail housing bolted on where the 4WD has the transfercase. So you can get a transmission out of a 4WD truck as well, you just transfer your tail housing to the transmission.
