Default Transfer case issue

First, long time reader, thanks to all for useful info on previous problems
Second, first post. switched on my 4 wheel (high and low) this past weekend and got a chattering noise. Seemed to engage, but was making a tinging sound, like gear out of place. Any ideas before i bring it to shop?

does the noise happen all the time or just in turns?

are all the tires matched brand, size and treadwear?

hard to say without hearing the noise. A stretched chain makes a loud rattle.

Tires are all the same, the noise happens when i turn on the 4 wheel drive and comes from the center of the truck.

Update: Just got her back. Turns out the boot on the cv joint in front of the transfer case had wore out and ripped and got dirt/snow/roadgrime in it. They rebuild the driveshaft and now all is good. so it seems like this may have been a long time problem that finally started making noise.
