Default To change tranny fluid or to not?

Hello,

I have 170,000 miles on my '05 Dakota and have never had a tranny fluid REFRESH/Change done. The fluid has lost some color and slightly smells burnt, but nothing serious.

Shifting is smooth most of the time. Sometimes going from R to D, it slams hard. It can also take a while to start moving the vehicle when cold - hitting the gas doesn't amount to much movement if you try to move right after starting.

What are others doing in regards to Tranny fluid exchanges? I'm not interested in doing a flush after hearing many stories about high mileage vehicles not working well after a flush. However, I think a fluid exchange might be in order and low risk. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

You should be fine dropping the pan, replacing the filters and the fluid lost. Use Mopar filters. These trucks do not like aftermarket filters. I had mine done about 80k miles. Suffered no ill effects. It's flushing a high mileage transmission that can invite problems to occur.

Maybe for a Ram. Not a 3rd gen Dakota.

I too dropped the pan and changed filters at 80k. Glad to see a trans hold up with no maintenance as yours has.

Is their any way you can find out if high mileage trucks have had a transmission fluid flush? I've only had my truck for about 25000 miles and I don't want to do any damage.

Only way to tell is by receipts or if it was done at a dealer, a service history report. Otherwise, no.
