Default 08 Gas Gauge Question...

My 2008 Dodge Dakota has quite a funky quirk... After I fill up the tank, the needle stays on Full for 70+ miles then begins to fall. Even the digital indicator won't really move. Is this normal or not?

Thanks.

Probably normal. Have you checked your fuel consumption the old fashioned way? Are you having problems otherwise?

When you fill up do you go past when the pump kicks off? I know on my 05 if the pump kicks off and I fill a little more to get to an even amount, the needle will stay above full for little while.

I believe every vehicle I've ever possessed could go around 50 miles after a click-off fillup before the gas gauge needle started moving.

If i had to guess why, it's probably because the filler neck holds gas too...So until the gas in the filler neck is used up and the fluid level comes down below the top of the tank, the electronic sending-unit inside the tank for the gas gauge will be pegged at max.

Mine stays on full for a while too. Probably because when the pump clicks off, I can't fit another nickels worth in there.

i remember back in high school the shop teacher explaining the difference between US gas gauges and foreign. US gauges stay on Full for a while to give the impression of better fuel economy. Foreign gauges will read accurate all the way.

never really took the time to look into it. i try not to look at my gas gauge on the Dakota.
