Default wipers not working except with washer

2006 Dakota 4.7 non-HO quad cab 4wd. My wipers will not run in intermittent, slow, or fast, but they will wipe three times when the washer button is held down. If I leave the wiper switch in intermittent/slow/fast position, after multiple times of using the washer function, they will eventually start to run like normal, but they also sometimes quit. No problems with anything else on the multi-function switch.

most multi-function switches use a resistive mux circuit...each position of the switch results in a different resistance and therefore different voltage signal to the controlling module. Unwanted resistance changes in the circuit will effect normal operation. The fact that some of the wiper switch position work suggest the wiring is ok. Without testing or looking at a wiring diagram my best guess would be...a faulty switch.
