They make a plug and play system for our trucks. Took me about 15 mins to install and uses the factory key fob. WAY easier than trying to get the OEM system running.
Just press the lock button in the remote 3 times and the truck fires right up. It has been working flawless for four years.
It uses can-bus communication to start and monitor the truck. If anyone gets in the vehicle and tries to do anything without the key being put in the ignition first it will shut the engine and ignition back off. Without the key in the ignition the steering and shifter are still locked also do nobody is driving away with your truck.

Hello JKeaton, yes I meant remote start.
Rod, thank you!! I am down to 1 key, so will get 1 new one for sure. Key #1's plastic and buttons are worn, so I was thinking why not get two new ones, and just change the key and plastic if possible on Key#1.
The option I have is to get for about $45, 2 keys (uncut) that have the remote start option on the key. I was thinking it would be pretty cool to use that 4th button for the remote start. Is it possible to link the 4th button the aftermarket remote start?

My truck had the OEM remote start already installed when I bought it. Those keys in the Amazon link look exactly like my OEM keys. One of the reviewers indicated that it worked with his '08 Dakota. I assume he had an OEM remote start system.
Don't know about the aftermarket system.
OEM option? https://www.moparpartsoverstock.com/.../82212242.html

The 4th button is on the board inside your remote even if it isn't on the exterior of the remote. I've pressed it and can hear relays on the truck click but nothing happens. You would probably need the OEM kit outlined above to make it a true OEM setup. The remote alone won't do it.Originally Posted by ajbartels

I reached out to the plug and play listed in this article about the 4th button use on remotes. No reply. So let me just say the goal based on the info given here. I will explore the aftermarket more because of price usually with OEM. The remote option is the goal to make it a clean and intuitive to use device. If that does not work, I will go with OEM. Will update this thread when done, cost, install time, any trouble, and how it works. Thank you all.

My 2006, shown in my signature, had a "made by dodge", after sale remote start on it. It used a separate remote ringed to the main remote, so there are possibilities out there.

Best of luck. Looking forward to hearing how it all turned out.Originally Posted by ajbartels
