Unhappy engine replace - COOLANT??

So me and a friend replaced the engine in my 2006 Dodge Dakota. After several issues we got everything back on EXCEPT the radiator and connecting hoses for the coolant. We just wanted to see if it turned over and it did TRY but it seemed as soon as it started it would kill. My friend suggested that maybe the computer is not letting it run because there is no coolant running through the engine so the temp sensors or something is not letting the engine run. We're putting on the radiator, hoses tomorrow but I think something else is hindering our efforts. We already replaced the crank sensor ring because the one on my engine was different than the one we pulled out a Dodge Ram. 3.7 liter V6. Any input or reply at all would be great.

No coolant in the block won’t cause the engine to start and die, your problem lies elsewhere.
